VPN server

In this mode, a VPN is created to virtually reproduce a local network (LAN) between players in the lobby. The host's VPN IP is then used as the server address to automatically connect players when the game starts.

For this reason, Romstation will ask your permission to install a VPN interface on your system when you try to join or start your first server. You will not be able to join the lobby without accepting this installation.

The VPN will open all TCP/UDP ports, but Romstation adds a rule to the Windows firewall to block ports below 1024. So remember to keep your firewall activated.

Finally, don't forget that connecting clients to server is established automatically when the game is started. Host must therefore start before clients and never the opposite.

PPSSPP

PPSSPP Netplay is the emulator used to support online multiplayer for PSP games. However, this is a different version than the one you probably use in your solo games. For this reason, an automatic import of saves is proposed to you the first time you run the emulator.

Saves:

Certain random bugs specific to the PPSSPP emulator can occasionally corrupt game saves stored in the "memstick/PSP/SAVEDATA" directory, at the root of the PPSSPP installation directory. To prevent this kind of problem, be aware that an automatic backup is systematically performed each time the emulator is launched. Backups are kept for three months in their respective archives, themselves located in the "memstick/PSP/SAVEDATA_BACKUP" directory, at the root of the PPSSPP installation directory.

DOSBox ECE

DOSBox ECE Netplay is the emulator used to support online multiplayer for DOS games.

Configure your keys:

DOSBox ECE is used without a graphical interface. To configure your keys (joystick or keyboard), use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+F1". This opens the Mapper tool. It's up to you to use it to assign joystick and keyboard keys. The game will continue to use the keyboard for movement, but you can also play with your controller.

Just click on the key (for example: the up arrow on the keyboard), then on the "Add" button and use the corresponding function of your joystick (like tilting the left analog stick or the BMD up).

Confirm your key configuration by clicking on "Save". Do not forget to connect the controller to configure before starting the emulator.

IPX protocol:

DOSBox ECE emulates an obsolete network protocol (IPX) to operate the Multiplayer mode of games. This protocol allows the transfer of packets through a local area network (LAN), hence the use of a VPN. Once the VPN connection is established between the emulators, players will have to browse the options menu specific to each game to create/join the IPX server.

Manual connection

When you start/join a VPN server with manual connection, no assistance is provided to configure the emulator or the game. However, DOSBox ECE Netplay and PPSSPP Netplay include a Client/Server profile which will facilitate the connection. Select the appropriate profile for your case when you start the game to automatically connect the emulator to the VPN server of the active lobby.

If you select a Client profile, a pop-up will prompt you to enter the server address manually. When an active lobby is detected by this profile, the field is automatically filled with the VPN IP of the lobby host.

This option can also be used by players who want to connect to their own VPN server, or open their ports manually without going through a VPN.
