The player does not embody Link, but the mascot of the platform in a quest obliging him to find the Master Sword, the only weapon that can defeat Ganon. The latter has spread its harmful effect on the kingdom of Hyrule, so the player must find the Triforce, save Princess Zelda kidnapped by Ganon and bring peace to the kingdom.
The game system is identical to that of its model. The character moves freely and unmarked in a world map displayed in top view, but also explores several underground labyrinthine dungeons. The kingdom of Hyrule is inhabited by many monsters that Link must fight, and conceals many secrets and puzzles to solve, which allows the character to discover objects useful for his progress in the quest or weapons improving his abilities. Exploration and the discovery of secrets are the heart of the gaming experience. However, several specificities substantially modify the gaming experience. The game is only playable during its broadcast for one hour. SoundLink voice files are broadcast live during the game, allowing a narrator to offer clues, or information on the scenario, but also depending on the time to offer new abilities or signal power-ups. The player can only access a limited part of the map during the period, but can however save his progress on the memory card of the BS-X cartridge of the Satellaview.
The game, adapted from the first installment of The Legend of Zelda series, is programmed by students in a project organized by Nintendo. In addition to higher quality graphics enabled by the Super Famicom and a re-orchestrated soundtrack, BS Zelda no densetsu is one of the first games to offer joint and simultaneous online play to a community of players (even if the primary goal and unreached from Nintendo is to design an online multiplayer game).
BS Zelda no densetsu (BSゼルダの伝説?, sometimes referred to as BS The Legend of Zelda or simply BS Zelda) is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo and released only in Japan by St.GIGA from August through its satellite network on the Satellaview, the extension of the Super Famicom. Adapted from The Legend of Zelda, the first game in the eponymous series, it is split into four parts and is broadcast periodically once a week on the St.GIGA satellite channel.
