The great kingdom of Redenze is on the brink of crisis. Its largest duchy, Westmarch, is teetering on the edge of civil war. Duke Tordred is dead, leaving two sons who both claim the throne. Forness, his legitimate son, and Zeddard, his eldest son born out of wedlock, seem unable to reach a compromise. The succession crisis can only end in bloodshed.

Sensing that his own forces will not suffice to defeat his elder brother, Forness has hired the mercenaries of the Phoenix Blade. These hired swordsmen, led by the cunning commander Fenix, might just tip the scales of the coming war in his favor. The story begins with Edric, newly promoted captain of the Phoenix Blades, as he prepares to prove himself to Forness and Fenix. He will soon discover that all is not as it seems in the duchy of Westmarch. In reality, this succession crisis has the potential to plunge the entire kingdom into ruin…

- The game is designed for Hard mode. Normal mode is fairly relaxed. There is no Easy mode.

- 30 playable characters, with virtually no redundancy.

- Many characters are essential to the plot → not well-suited for a "hardcore" run.

- Unlimited B support per character, but only one A support per character.

- Customizable weapons and numerous personal weapons

- Customizable classes, many of which are familiar and a few truly unique.

- Player units have a personal skill; they gain a second one upon promotion.

- Very few maps feature fog of war, and when it does, the fog is minimal (visibility limited to 4 tiles).

- The maps generally offer mechanics that discourage the "turtle tactic": time limits, chests, villages, NPCs to rescue, dangerous reinforcements, etc.
