Il y a quarante ans, Alain Colas, le plus populaire des navigateurs français, disparaissait durant la première Route du Rhum. Jamais on ne retrouvera son bateau, le "Manureva". Alain Chamfort en a fait une chanson devenue culte. Manureva, c'est le tube absolu d'Alain Chamfort. Mais pour Jean-François Colas, le frère du navigateur Alain Colas, disparu en mer, ce morceau reste un refrain lancinant. "Cette chanson, forcément, elle m'a pris aux tripes parce qu'elle pose une question que j'ai toujours en moi", confie-t-il. En 1978, Alain Colas fait partie des favoris de la première Route du Rhum. Vainqueur de la Transat anglaise en 1972, il est, avec Éric Tabarly, la grande figure de la voile de l'époque. Ce dernier lui vend son bateau qu'il rebaptise Manureva, "oiseau de voyage" en tahitien. Alors qu'il figure parmi les premiers de la course, Alain Colas disparaît avec son navire. Les recherches dureront un mois, en vain. Chamfort et Gainsbourg s'emparent du Manureva Au même moment, le chanteur Alain Chamfort travaille sur son troisième album. Il tient une mélodie accrocheuse et demande à Serge Gainsbourg d'en écrire les paroles. La première version s'appelle Adieu California, mais le chanteur n'est pas convaincu. Lors d'un dîner avec le navigateur Eugène Riguidel, Serge Gainsbourg entend parler du Manureva. Il téléphone à Alain Chamfort, qui trouve les sonorités du mot beaucoup plus mélodieuses ; le carton sera immédiat. La famille d'Alain Colas a reçu cette chanson de plein fouet, comme un "uppercut", mais aujourd'hui, c'est ce qui lui permet "de garder la mémoire". Vivre une telle symbiose entre le chanteur et le public est un moment magique qu'il faut vivre une fois dans sa vie!
