    Tomcat Alley

    Ratchet & Clank

Ratchet & Clank is a platform action game in a similar vein to the 3D versions of the Rayman, Sonic, Mario, or other comparable games. It involves the two protagonists Ratchet, a furry alien creature, and Clank, a nerdy little robot, going on a quest to find Captain Qwark and ultimately to help save the galaxy.

Ratchet & Clank includes many of the common features seen in previous similar games, but distinguishes itself in a number of ways. The game's levels are fairly vast and contain detailed structures which are visible at all times (i.e. there is no distance fog). The game also includes a number of prominently featured mini-games, such as a space fight sequence and a number of turret shoot-outs which are akin to Missile Command in the first person.

The game has over twenty levels (planets) and includes as many cutscenes made with in-game graphics which tell the story. Also of note is that the story is non-linear, requiring the player to return to previous levels to complete objectives and to choose between multiple paths forward. There is also a respectable array of weapons, gadgets, and accessories to find or buy as the game progresses, which offer some unique gameplay features.

  19. Resident Evil HD Remaster is a high-definition adaptation of the original Resident Evil released in 1996. Developed by Capcom, this remake retains the structure and atmosphere of the original while enhancing visual and audio elements for modern platforms. Initially released in 2002 and later ported to the Wii in 2009, this version brings the classic survival horror experience to current-gen consoles and PC.

Technically, the game features updated graphics, including higher resolution textures and improved character models, enhancing the overall visual fidelity. The environments benefit from enhanced lighting and effects, heightening the atmosphere of fear and tension. The sound design has also been refined, with improved audio quality and spatial effects contributing to a more immersive experience.

One notable addition is the option to choose between original and widescreen display modes, accommodating different preferences. Similarly, players can opt for original or modern gameplay mechanics, catering to both purists and newcomers to the series. Additionally, the game includes bonus content such as extra costumes and access to previously unreleased documents, adding value for fans of the franchise.

While the HD Remaster stays faithful to the original game, offering a polished and immersive experience, it lacks significant new features or enhancements. Despite this, it remains a compelling choice for both longtime fans and newcomers looking to experience a classic survival horror title in a modernized form.

    Final Fantasy XII

Two powerful empires, Archadia and Rozaria, are at war. All they care for is victory over the opponent. In order to achieve it more quickly, Archadia invades the small kingdom of Dalmasca. The young prince of Dalmasca falls in battle shortly after his marriage to the beautiful princess Ashe. The king is murdered under mysterious circumstances just before signing a peace treaty with Archadia. The iron rule of the empire is established in the small country.

The player takes control of a young thief named Vaan who lives in Rabanastre, the capital city of Dalmasca. Through a series of events Vaan finds himself involved in the political struggle, hoping to avenge the death of his treacherously murdered brother.

Final Fantasy XII is set in Ivalice, a fantasy world which also served as a setting for Final Fantasy Tactics. The game differs from its predecessors in several core gameplay-related aspects. The game world is composed of vast areas with visibly walking enemies. There are no separate battle screens in the game; combat takes place in the same environment as exploration. Player-controlled characters can freely move during combat. Actions are still selected by choosing commands from a pop-up menu, and each character has a traditional ATB bar that determines when he or she may act; however, overall the combat resembles the "real-time with pause" system of Western role-playing games such as Knights of the Old Republic.

The player can issue specific commands to the party members, or assign to them combat strategies (called "gambits" in the game). New magic, abilities, and equipment are bought from stores or found in containers in the world. Before a character can use any of these, the player has to buy a corresponding license by spending license points earned in combat. These act like skill points, and can be allocated by the player manually on the character's license board.

In addition to the enemies and bosses found by following the story, the player can also accept "Hunts" posted in bars or offered to the player in conversations. These are optional encounters where the player has to track down and either trap or lure a very powerful monster before defeating it.

    Suikoden V

The Queendom of Falena is a prosperous country ruled by Queen Arshtat. The Sun Rune, one of the legendary twenty-seven True Runes, is said to protect Falena from all danger, working in conjunction with the Twilight Rune and the Dawn Rune. Recently, the inhabitants of the town of Lordlake rebelled against the queen's rule. In order to put an end to the rebellion, the queen used the power of the Sun Rune, killing Lordlake's leader and turning the town's environment into a barren, scorched wasteland. Using the rune also rendered the formerly kind and benevolent queen mentally unstable.

Meanwhile, the traditional Sacred Games are being held. The champion has the right to claim the hand of Lymsleia, the princess and the future queen of Falena. Two powerful nobility factions are trying to gain the upper hand in the championship through intrigues and manipulation. Eventually, one of them orchestrates an assault on the royal castle, capturing the princess and taking control of the country. Arshtat's son and Lymsleia's older brother, the prince of Falena, manages to escape along with a few allies. The prince must secure the help of other factions and nations, build an army, and liberate his homeland.

Suikoden V is, chronologically, a remote sequel to Suikoden IV and a close prequel to the first game, set eight years before it. Traditional elements of the series - the ability to recruit 108 characters to help the hero on his quest, maintaining an own castle, the rune-based magic system (limited casting of spells instead of magic points) - are all present in this installment. Like in the first two games, the player manages an active party of individually controlled six characters, with four others acting as backup. Party formation plays an important role now, as the party receives bonuses by using different placements and tactics. Characters can execute combo attacks, which vary depending on the members currently participating in the battle. The skill system from the third game is back: characters can learn various passive abilities which increase their parameters and improve combat behavior.

The duel battles are timed in this installment, the player having to quickly select an attack type before the opponent executes his or hers. Turn-based tactical army combat from the previous entries has been replaced by real-time strategy battles. The player navigates various types of units on land or sea; the unit types relate to each other in a "rock-paper-scissors" fashion, each type being strong and weak against two others.

  23. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 for handheld and mobile platforms is similar to the game on consoles. It adapts the last four films of the Harry Potter series into the LEGO game format. Compared to the console version, it has fewer and smaller levels with different puzzles and less playable characters.

The story of the films is retold in 14 chapters (compared to the 24 chapters of the console version). A lot of the same cutscenes of the console version are re-used. Gameplay follows the standard template of the LEGO series: players move through the levels, picking up collectibles, solving puzzles and defeating occasional enemies. Different characters have different abilities which must be used in combination to overcome the challenges. Only wizards and witches can use magic spells like Wingardium Leviosa (for levitating objects) or Stupefy (for stunning enemies). Other skills include super strength (for pulling open doors) or the control of a pet (which can dig in the ground to discover secrets). Once completed in Story Mode, levels become available for Free Play, which allows using unlocked or bought characters for replaying the levels, discovering any remaining secrets through their special abilities.

    Metropolismania

Metropolismania is a city building game with a Japanese anime style. The goal is to grow a town to a target population. This is accomplished by interacting with NPCs and becoming friends by giving them gifts and talking with them. Attract citizens by building up the town with offices, grocers, entertainment and farming buildings (to name a few).

Rather than overlooking the environment, the player controls a character from a third-person perspective. Walking around, new constructions can be started and roads can be built. The buildings can be entered too. Side quests happen every level, some of which are quite strange. Expect to be involved in a smuggling ring or a cult.
