Generation of Chaos is a kingdom-centric game that not only expands through military prowess, but also improves the inner workings of the player's kingdom. The game evolves between two modes: kingdom management and army battles.

Kingdom management is viewed from an isometric perspective on a tile-based playfield and allows players to see their kingdom's possessions and the rest of the world, allowing players to track their enemies' progress. Players can move five units per turn, improve their fortifications and the commercial status of their towns and castles, modify the surrounding terrain, or recruit officers, among other actions.

Every unit has a type, with some unit types being either more powerful or much weaker when matched against certain other types. When two units meet on the map, they engage in real-time military battle. The perspective is again isometric, with each side usually having a unit commander and 29 soldiers.
