Rouge Victoire is the spunky young princess of Silverbell Kingdom. As the heiress of the royal family, an incredible power lies within her... a power that she is not always able to fully control. Shion Earthland, Rouge's childhood friend, is a young swordsman sworn as her protector. With the king, Rouge's father, in failing health, and the queen turned to stone by a terrible curse, Rouge must prove herself fit to rule her country and learn to control her power with the help of her friends and her indomitable sense of justice.

Abarenbou Princess is a basic Japanese-style RPG broken into eight chapters, with the player controlling a party of up to four characters at any one time. However, rather than earning experience and leveling up, each character's effectiveness in battle is determined by their "motivation". Depending on the player's responses during story events, characters' motivation levels will change. A character with higher motivation will perform better in battle, and have more skills available for use. A given response may cause one characters' motivation to increase, but also cause others' to decrease, so it is important to balance all of the relations to ensure an effective party.

During battle, the player is not given direct command over their party members, but rather selects from a list of orders to give, such as "Attack that lizard!", "Save your energy!", or "Leave it to me!" Depending on that character's motivation, certain options may be unavailable or ineffective. Similarly, the player may also see a list of possible moves that each enemy may make that turn. Although the player technically controls Shion, the game will only be over if Rouge loses all her HP. However, if a battle is lost, the player may choose to simply retry the battle immediately. Winning a battle also allows Shion to comment on what happened, which will also affect motivation levels.

Individual chapters can be replayed once completed, and the best times and scores are saved. There is also a training mode, where the player can test out various attacks and battle setups without fear of a game over.
