Two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, the continent of Tamriel is in turmoil. The Emperor's throne is without an heir, the Blades have been disbanded, and elven nations are capturing Imperial territory. The assassination of the King of Skyrim, Tamriel's northern province, has led to a civil war between those seeking independence and those wanting to remain under Imperial control.

A prisoner, accused of aiding the Stormcloaks, is about to be executed when a dragon attacks the town, allowing for an unexpected escape. Freed, the ex-prisoner ventures into Skyrim, where rumors of dragons spread.

Skyrim is an open-world role-playing game with action-based combat. Players can explore Skyrim in either first or third person, undertaking main or side quests and fast traveling to previously visited locations. There are ten races to choose from, each with its own advantages and limitations. The character evolves based on play style without predefined classes, improving skills through use, books, or training.

The game includes features from Fallout 3, such as enemy level scaling and lockpicking. Players can craft, cook, forge, and enchant items. Melee combat, archery, and magic are available, with each race having a unique power. New to the series are Shouts, powerful abilities based on the Dragon language, requiring dragon souls and ancient words.

Crimes like theft and murder result in bounties, fines, or jail time. The player can escape prison but risks losing skill progress. Players can join various factions, each with their own quests and benefits, and can become werewolves or vampires, each with distinct traits.
