Mortal Kombat rises again, taking cues from Capcom and Street Fighter IV by returning to its 2D roots. Complex combo systems from 3D iterations like Deadly Alliance are streamlined or removed entirely. The game also partially rewrites the franchise's story, revisiting the original tournaments of the first three games. The Story mode follows specific characters through chapters, recounting early series events. The fighting engine blends elements of Mortal Kombat II and 3, with a power bar enabling powered-up special moves and devastating X-Ray attacks. Multiplayer offers various modes including online play, with the return of the Krypt for unlocking bonuses.
