The hero of the Gothic saga has become King Robar III, but his soul was corrupted after he recklessly agreed to deliver a mysterious amulet to a blind woman, leading him to crave power and conquest. ArcaniA: Gothic 4, the successor to Gothic 3, does not continue the previous story but offers a back-to-basics approach with streamlined features.
Set a decade after the previous game, it follows a new hero seeking revenge against those who massacred his loved ones. The world map is smaller and the plot is linear, with clear objectives eliminating guesswork. There are no guilds, factions, or moral codes, and the inventory has no limit.
Players can choose from three main classes (mage, ranger, warrior), and customize their skills and equipment. Battles are action-based, with options to use ranged or melee weapons or cast elemental spells (fire, lightning, ice). Players can gather plants and minerals to craft potions and other items with a simplified system. Armor and weapon upgrades can be bought with gold earned from defeated enemies or quest rewards.

The story directly follows up the ending of the main game and plays out around the city Setarrif which is threatened by a demon. As the nameless hero, either imported from the main game or as a new character of level 28, the player's quest is to set things right.
Besides new areas, weapons and enemies, there are no changes to the gameplay mechanics. Most of the game is spent in linear dungeons and the open areas offer only a few sidequests. However, the player meets some known faces from the main game and even gets to play as two of them for a short time.
