Kao the kangaroo, you won't believe it, you control a kangaroo, in a 3D action/platform game. After Rayman 2, it's obvious that I expected a lot less from this Kao, but still. Where to start… let’s see the scenario! Kao is happy with his friends, until the day when evil hunters capture him and his friends. But he manages to get his hands on some boxing gloves, decides to show off and knock out all the bad guys.

Kao is quite cute. It's frankly pitiful compared to Rayman 2 and even the first Sonic Adventure, but it remains beautiful to the eye. We will regret the lack of diversity within the levels, as well as the level and the design of the game's characters. The game is colorful in a very beautiful way, in a cartoon style. We're closer to a Crash Bandicoot than a Tomb Raider. To tell the truth, it looks A LOT like Crash Bandicoot... only thinner (Dreamcast power required), slower and less charismatic (sloppy gameplay required). The character has a good face, but unfortunately, few expressions or facial expressions. The animation is fluid but frankly slow, no luck.

Let's forget everything said above, and see the content of the game. Worlds divided into levels (30 in total), various bonuses sprinkled in (extra life, freezing enemies, save points, etc.). The enemies are quite childish but cute (carnivorous plants, evil sharks, snowmen, scorpions, etc.). On the other hand, they are few in number and not very original. With the exception of the bosses, present at almost every level (so there also around thirty), which are quite successful (and increase the score by one point). It ranges from a killer robot to a giant monkey to a boxing match with a reindeer. Well, that's what kept me going in the game, because if they're not difficult to defeat, they're fun. The levels offer the minimum of variety and are not very inspired. We find the classics of the snowy world, desert, jungle, ocean…

The game has 25 fairly short levels, and above all very linear. Personally, I prefer Mario 64-like to Crash Bandicoot-like. Note that the fact of evolving in a corridor of beasts of obstacles and enemies makes the game repetitive quite quickly, even taking into account the cool little ideas nearby (snowboarding for example). Nevertheless, Crash Bandicoot was full of humor, playable and very fun. Concerning Kao, it is less obvious. The game is quite difficult, mainly because of the gameplay. It ends quickly despite everything.
