Dead Space 2 is a third-person shooter video game where players control Isaac Clarke, an engineer who fights against the Necromorphs, polymorphic parasitic extraterrestrials that feed off of dead tissue. The game takes place three years after the first installment, where Isaac is found derelict in space and brought aboard a massive space station. While being psycho-analyzed, a new Necromorph outbreak occurs, and Isaac must escape, fight against dementia, and discover the truth behind the reappearance of the Necromorphs and another Marker.

The game retains the dismemberment mechanic from the first game and includes new abilities like controlling movement in zero-gravity. The game's changes are mostly cosmetic, with a broader visual design.
