DoDonPachi is a shoot 'em up with vertical scrolling of type manic shooter. Developed by Cave and published by Atlus, it was released in 1997 on arcade terminals, it is the first of the DoDonPachi saga but the second game of the Cave company, it is the sequel of DonPachi published in 1995. Acclaimed for the quality of its game system and graphics, DoDonPachi is considered one of the greatest titles of the genre.

DoDonPachi is probably the manic shooter to remember. But is this mythical vertical shooter as manic as it looks. Before leaving to fight against the forces of the mysterious wasp, a discreet but recurrent theme in the whole saga, you will have to choose between 3 ships and 2 types of weapons.

- Type A, red ship: the fastest, it has a powerful frontal fire, it is also called a ducking ship.
- Type B, green ship: intermediate speed of movement, its advantage lies in the fact that it has two small options which will shoot in the direction of your movement.
(example: you move towards the left, the two options will direct the shots towards the left).
- Type C, blue ship: the slowest, wide and not very powerful, the most common ship among beginners because of its relatively slow movement which allows to dodge patterns more easily, and its shooting which allows to destroy a large part of the enemies.

Everyone will have the possibility to choose between a shot mode and a laser mode. The first one allows you to have a more powerful attack on the normal shot, the second one reinforces the power of the laser and destroys the weak enemies from the first shot, the laser will automatically destroy them, it will not block them anymore.

The ships, taken from Donpachi, are balanced in their own way: the blue one, a beginner's favorite, has an extended frontal fan shot, making it easier to progress through the levels, but a weaker laser than the others, making bosses more difficult to defeat. The red one, a veteran favorite, has a narrow frontal fire but a heavy laser. The green helicopter has more balanced options, with the added bonus of two modules firing in the direction the ship is leaning.

Second choice: laser or shot. In laser mode, the frontal fire is weaker than the laser, it is the opposite for the shot mode. Crucial choice for the game, the laser mode seems to be the most popular. Arming is quite simple: A button to shoot, long press to activate a huge destructive laser. B button for the smart bomb and laser+B to activate the so enjoyable giant shot. The gameplay is just like the rest, fabulous. The wonderful response time of the ship and the very small collision mask located in fact on the cockpit of the ship allow the most daring slaloms. Graphically, we are in the middle of a very high quality old school know-how, each pixel has been chiseled by hand, the sceneries are full of details, each sprite is worked in its smallest details, enough to make pixel art lovers envious. The sound atmosphere is coordinated with the rest: exaggeratedly gruff sound effects, a real sound blast, covering unforgettable themes very rock satrianesque in their flights of electric guitar.

"Drunken" is a term that often comes back when we start talking about DoDonPachi, each Levels is a hymn to smashing, everything farting everywhere, a hysteria that we find too rarely. A violence of appearance which for the detractors of the manic make DoDonPachi a typical shoot of the defects of the genre permissive gameplay and Levels design centered on the overkill. They are cordially invited to reread their copy, as DoDonPachi offers a construction as ingenious and cunning as the classics of the old school genre, coupled with an outstanding gameplay making the monster quite playable with a real challenge worthy of interest.
