Choro Q Park is a 1998 racing game for the Sega Saturn in which players race Takara's Choro Q/Penny Racers line of toy cars. It was only released in Japan.
The Choro Q video games are a series of video games based on Takara's Choro Q toy cars (also known as Penny Racers in English-speaking markets). The games have been localised for Western release under many different names, including Gadget Racers, Penny Racers and Road Trip. Most of these games were developed by external companies, although they are usually credited to Takara since the developers' name rarely appears outside of the ending credits.
Only three games in the series were released outside of Japan prior to 2001 (including the 1984 MSX game by Taito Corporation, which is unrelated to the later Choro Q titles) - Choro Q for the PlayStation (released in Europe only as Penny Racers) and Choro Q 64 for the Nintendo 64 (released in North America and Europe as Penny Racers). However, since 2001 many of the titles have been released in the US and PAL regions as budget titles.
Choro Q or Penny Racers as they were known in the UK (probably the same in the US too) are those small squashed like cars where you put a penny in to the slot on the back of them so that they'd perform some sort of wheelie. Well, those cars are what Choro Q Park is all about. Takara have been very wise in not making this game a straight racing game because to be honest it would be a bit dull and classed as a Mario Kart rip off, probably. Takara have made Choro Q Park in to a type of adventure racing game.
You must complete different races before you can move on to the higher level courses as well as visit the garage, body shop, training area and other areas. The races are also not as straight forward as you might think. Each Choro Q car can only travel so far before it's power starts to fade. At first it's impossible to win any races because you only own one car. But every time you race you can pick up money that's dotted around the course as well as weapons to throw at the other racers. With the money you collect you can buy extra cars. Now each race has a few different points on the map where you can place "Change" cars. What that means is that once you pass this point your car will automatically change to another that you have selected meaning your speed won't drop since the new car will be fresh on the track.. By the time you reach back to your original car's starting point it would have had time to recharge and be ready to go again at full speed. This is quite a unique and fun little idea that Takara have added to Choro Q Park making it interesting enough to keep you coming back. There are about 80 cars to find too!
Graphically Choro Q isn't that amazing. The graphics do suit the purpose of the game though, giving it that cute cartoon look which you'd expect from Choro Q. Audio is the same. Nothing that stands out really but what is there suits the game. Choro Q is fun and is not a serious racer.
