Précurseur en la matière, Sega n'a pas attendu Phantasy Star Online pour expérimenter le jeu en ligne sur console. Commercialisé en 1991, le Megamodem était en effet un périphérique très avant-gardiste. Par ailleurs, il était également possible de télécharger quelques titres exclusifs en se connectant au réseau Sega Meganet. Parmi les 28 jeux distribués sur la plate-forme, l'obscur Sonic Eraser se présentait comme une énième déclinaison du gameplay de Columns. Rien de bien excitant donc, mais la seule présence du hérisson bleu dans un jeu est déjà singulière.
